That's not the only issue I found.
The story is too long. Way too long. At 110,000 words, I really need to trim it down. Unfortunately, this isn't going to work. Not without cutting out essential information. As it stands, the story already rushes through in some spots, so even if I cut some spots, I'll have to add other scenes. I know 110K isn't long for some books, but in YA fiction, it's really pushing it, especially for a prequel. I've always envisioned prequels and other companion stories as part of the series, but in my vision, these supplemental stories would be short stories or novellas. A 110K (or more) prequel just doesn't work for this series, I'm afraid.
And more problems...
Abe's story begins when he's 16 and continues through his first assignment after graduation, his travels as a Warrior, the assignment that leads him to Jerica, and his subsequent marriage. It also covers the birth of each of this children and their travels as a family. And that's not all... Abe's story continues (on and on and on) right up until Bryce meets Alisa. And it doesn't end there. The long, long timeline has always bothered me. The book is really two or three separate books stuffed into one. Or is it? Abe's story isn't really complete until Nevare is dead.
I've been mired in indecision for weeks. I've talked to some trusted friends (thanks Maegan and Joleene) and mulled this over. I've made decisions and then changed my mind (and then changed it again). I've finally decided to split the story into two (possibly three) parts. As of right now, I've found a good stopping point for the first part of the story and I've named it The Warrior, as this section of the story is largely Abe's journey as a Warrior. The story will have a satisfactory ending that still leaves room for more.
If you've read the main series, you already know where the story ends for Abe, but The Warriorand The Protector (part II) will tell you how it all happens. The Warrior is all about Abe, but The Protector is about the family. Even though part II is from Abe's point of view, it will give interesting insights into Jerica and the kids. There's are some interesting tidbits about Bryce and how he became the arrogant, prideful, powerful (but loveable!) person we meet in Spellbound.
I hope you'll all fall in love with Abe's story!
Right now, I'm planning to release The Warrior at the end of August or beginning of September. I have a lot of work to do before then, but I'm certain it's doable. The Protector... well, that story needs quite a bit more work before it's ready, so at this point, I'm not prepared to give a release date. I'm still planning to release Nightbound (book four in the main series) by the end of the year, and to be honest, that's going to be a huge challenge.
Enough rambling. I've got a lot of work to do, so it's back to writing for me! I'll be back soon with more information and some solid release dates.
